For the lovers of nature the excursion on the “trenino verde” is an opportunity not to be missed to admire the unspoilt scenery otherwise impossible to reach. On board of these old steam trains the journey is not only through nature, but a true step back in time.
There are various itineraries: Nulvi-Palau (116km), Macomer-Bosa (46km), Isili-Sorgono (83km), the longest and the most sought after by tourists is Arbatax-Mandas for a total length of 159km that takes about 5 hours. It is advisable to pick out one of the many places along the way to explore the area and enjoy a typical Sardinian meal in one of the many agriturismos. For the trekking aficionados and the mountain lovers Niala is the perfect place to stop. Overlooked by the limestone peaks of the Ogliastra, Niala is just on the edge of the Natural Oasis of Montarbu, one of the most famous spots of the Gennargentu, the natural habitat for mouflons and eagles.
